01-02-2006 - THE BLUE TRAIN SCOOPS DINERS CLUB PLATINUM AWARDS

The Blue Train, one of South Africa`s most well-known tourism icons, has been awarded two platinum awards by Diner`s Club, in their 2005 Diners Club International Winelist of the Year Awards. Both trains in service received a platinum award, for their different, but complementary and equally excellent, wine lists. The Diner`s Club adjudicator looked at both trains as separate entities.

Dorcas Ledwaba, Executive Manager of The Blue Train, comments, "We are thrilled with having won these awards for our wine lists. For potential and existing Blue Train guests, particularly those who are wine connoisseurs, this provides them with the affirmation that they will be able to enjoy the standard of wines on the train that they are used to. It`s also particularly pleasing as we prepare to celebrate our 60th birthday next year, to know that we are 'on the right track' in terms of the wines we are offering travellers!"

The 2005 Diners Club International Winelist of the Year Awards, which have always been highly regarded by both the restaurant and wine industry, were officially re-launched in June this year after a break of two years, to encourage food and wine-serving establishments to consistently improve the standards of the wine lists they offer their patrons. Diners Club International re-introduced the awards after re-formulating both the award categories and the requirements, ensuring that they are in line with market and industry trends. Judges looked at restaurants that go the extra mile in compiling their wine lists, creating lists which are in harmony with the food style of their enterprises, offering a variety of cultivars and breadth in terms of wine of origin areas and including wines, not only from the respected large companies, but also from boutique and small production wineries.

Ledwaba concludes, "We are aiming to be acknowledged by Diner's Club in their Excellence category next year and will continue to ensure that, at all times, we offer our guests excellent wine lists that complement our carefully thought through menus."

For almost 60 years, The Blue Train has enjoyed an international reputation as one of the world's unsurpassed travelling experiences. The Blue Train has gathered an impressive list of accolades over the years, such as being voted the world's leading luxury train for four consecutive years in a row, and the recent awarding of "Superior Status" by the AA Grading Council.
